At the very top of New Zealand’s South Island, where rolling farmland gives way to enormous sand dunes and a wild stretch of coastline, you’ll find Wharariki Beach.
It’s dramatic without feeling polished. Remote without being unreachable. And on the right day, it can feel as though you have reached the very edge of the world.
For couples imagining an elopement somewhere a little wild, deeply romantic and completely removed from the traditional wedding setting, Wharariki is pretty special. But this isn't a place where you simply arrive, say your vows and leave.
There’s a walk to the beach, changing tides, unpredictable weather and plenty to think about when planning a wedding somewhere this beautifully untamed. And honestly? That’s part of what makes getting married here so memorable.
This guide covers everything you need to know about planning a Wharariki Beach elopement. from when to go and what to expect when you arrive, to where to stay and how you could turn a ceremony on the beach into an entire Golden Bay experience.
Why Elope at Wharariki Beach?
If you’ve seen photographs of Wharariki before, you’ll probably recognise its incredible Archway Islands rising from the sea.
But the landscape is about so much more than that one view.
There are sweeping dunes, caves and rock formations, long stretches of sand, rolling farmland and that beautifully windswept feeling that makes this part of Golden Bay feel unlike almost anywhere else. And because you reach the beach on foot, there’s a sense of anticipation to it too.
You leave the car behind, walk through farmland and coastal landscape, and then suddenly the beach opens up in front of you. For an elopement, that creates something pretty magical.
You might exchange vows tucked amongst the dunes, wander barefoot along the sand afterwards, find somewhere sheltered for a beautifully styled picnic, and stay until the last light disappears over the coast.
It doesn't need to feel like a wedding ceremony at Wharariki Beach. It can feel like a whole day built around being there.
Where Is Wharariki Beach?
Wharariki Beach sits at the very top of the South Island, beyond the small settlement of Pūponga in Golden Bay.
It’s the kind of place that already feels like an adventure before you’ve even reached the beach. The drive takes you through some of Golden Bay’s most beautiful countryside, eventually bringing you to the end of Wharariki Road and the beginning of the walking track.
From there, it’s approximately a 20-minute walk to the beach, following a track through farmland and coastal forest before emerging amongst the dunes.
There’s no driving right up to your ceremony spot here, and I actually think that’s part of its charm!
For an elopement, though, it does mean thinking a little differently about the day. Your dress, shoes, flowers, anything you’d like to bring onto the beach, and even your timeline all need to work with the location rather than against it.
That’s where a little thoughtful planning goes a long way.
What Getting Married at Wharariki Actually Looks Like
Wharariki is beautifully wild, and I think the best elopements here are the ones that embrace that rather than trying to make the landscape behave like a traditional wedding venue.
You may walk in wearing comfortable shoes and change once you reach the beach. Your dress might pick up a little sand. The wind might catch your veil. Plans may shift slightly depending on the weather, tides or where we find the perfect sheltered spot on the day.
And none of those things need to take away from the experience.
They can become part of it.
Rather than building a rigid timeline around one exact ceremony spot, I’d create enough space in your day to arrive, take everything in and work with the conditions we’re given.
Because when you choose somewhere like Wharariki, a little flexibility gives us the freedom to create something pretty incredible.
When Is the Best Time to Elope at Wharariki Beach?
There isn’t really one perfect season for a Wharariki Beach elopement. This part of New Zealand can feel completely different depending on the time of year — and each version has its own kind of magic.
Summer brings longer days and more time to make the most of the coast, especially if you’re dreaming of a later ceremony followed by sunset on the beach. It’s also one of the busier times to visit Golden Bay, so choosing your timing thoughtfully can help create a little more privacy.
Autumn can be beautiful for softer light, cooler temperatures and a quieter feel once the peak summer season begins to settle.
Winter brings shorter days and cooler conditions, but if you love the idea of something wonderfully moody and wild, Wharariki certainly knows how to deliver.
And spring brings longer days back again, along with all the unpredictability that makes planning somewhere exposed and coastal part of the adventure.
What About the Tide?
The tide is something I’d always consider when planning your timeline.
Wharariki changes enormously as the water moves in and out, revealing different stretches of sand and changing how you can explore the coastline. Rather than choosing a ceremony time based purely on what sounds convenient, I’d look at the tides, daylight, sunset and likely conditions together before shaping the flow of your day.
And the Weather?
If you’re choosing Wharariki, I’d go into it knowing that a little flexibility is part of the experience.
It can be windy. It might rain. The forecast may have us adjusting timings or changing exactly where something happens.
That doesn’t mean your day is ruined.
Some of the most beautiful moments here can come from exactly those conditions — a dress moving in the wind, dramatic skies over the water, running across the sand between showers.
I’ll always plan thoughtfully around the weather and have alternatives in mind, but sometimes the best plan is simply to put on another layer, pick up the umbrella and embrace it.
Where to Say Your Vows at Wharariki Beach
One of the things I love about Wharariki is how many completely different settings exist within one stretch of coastline.
Nestled amongst the dunes
For something intimate and a little more sheltered, the dunes create a beautiful setting for your vows. Surrounded by soft grasses and rolling sand, it feels private while still being unmistakably Wharariki.
Inside the archway
For something a little more dramatic, saying your vows beneath one of Wharariki’s incredible natural archways is pretty special. The tide needs to be right for this, so timing becomes an important part of planning your ceremony.
Out on the open beach
Or keep things beautifully simple and let the landscape do all the work. An open-beach ceremony gives you the ocean, enormous stretches of sand and Wharariki’s iconic rock formations as your backdrop.
The right spot will depend on the feeling you want for your ceremony, along with the tide and conditions on the day.
And honestly, Wharariki doesn’t need much added to it. A beautiful bouquet, perhaps a few considered details, and the landscape can do the rest.
A little note on the landscape
Wharariki sits within Pūponga Farm Park and is part of a sensitive coastal environment, so anything brought onto the beach needs to be carefully considered. Depending on what you’re planning, permissions may also be required.
For me, that’s another reason to work with this place rather than trying to transform it. Wharariki is already spectacular — anything we add should simply complement what’s there.
Make It More Than a Ceremony
Getting married at Wharariki doesn’t have to mean walking to the beach, exchanging your vows, taking a few photographs and heading home.
You’ve come all the way to one of the most extraordinary corners of New Zealand — I think it deserves a little more than that.
Your day could begin slowly at a beautiful Golden Bay stay, getting ready with nowhere to rush to. You might exchange letters over breakfast, have your hair and makeup done while the music is playing, and open a bottle of something special before heading towards the coast.
Then it’s off to Wharariki for your vows.
Afterwards, there’s no need to immediately move onto the next thing. Wander the beach. Kick off your shoes. Have a beautifully styled picnic tucked amongst the dunes. Cut a little wedding cake, pour the champagne and actually spend some time soaking up the fact that you just got married.
Stay for golden hour, explore as the tide changes, or head back to your accommodation for an incredible private dinner for two.
And your elopement doesn’t have to fit neatly into one afternoon, either.
Make a few days of it. Explore Golden Bay, kayak along the coast, horse trek at Wharariki, visit Farewell Spit, find somewhere beautiful for dinner or simply disappear into an off-grid stay together for a couple of nights.
Because the ceremony can be the reason you came.
But the experience around it is what turns your elopement into something you’ll never forget.
Where to Stay for Your Wharariki Beach Elopement
Where you stay can become just as much a part of your elopement as the ceremony itself.
Golden Bay has some incredible places to disappear to for a few days — from off-grid coastal stays to peaceful retreats surrounded by nature. For a Wharariki elopement, I’d look for somewhere that gives you space to slow down, get ready comfortably and make the whole trip feel special.
A few beautiful options:
Karu ō te Kiwi
If being close to Wharariki is important to you, Karu ō te Kiwi is a beautiful option. Surrounded by the wild landscape of this end of Golden Bay, it gives you the feeling of truly getting away from everything while keeping you close to the beach.
It also works beautifully as part of the wedding-day story — a slow morning getting ready here before heading out towards Wharariki.
Drift Off Grid
For couples wanting to turn their elopement into a proper escape, Drift Off Grid offers an intimate, off-grid coastal experience.
This is the kind of place I’d choose if you want the days around your wedding to feel just as considered as the wedding itself — switching off, slowing down and making a little holiday out of getting married.
Creating Balance Nature Retreat
Another lovely choice for couples drawn to peace, nature and a slower pace. Creating Balance has more of a retreat feel, making it particularly suited to an elopement centred around switching off and spending intentional time together.
Or Stay a Little Further Into Golden Bay
You don't necessarily need to stay right beside Wharariki.
Staying further into Golden Bay can give you access to more restaurants, activities and places to explore while still making the journey out to Wharariki part of the experience.
The biggest thing I’d consider isn’t simply “What accommodation is closest?”
It’s “Where would we actually love waking up on our wedding day?”
Because when your elopement is more than a few hours, where you stay becomes part of the memory too.
What to Wear & Bring for a Wharariki Elopement
Wharariki is the kind of place where what you wear needs to work with the landscape — but that certainly doesn’t mean sacrificing the beautiful wedding outfit you’ve imagined.
Your Wedding Outfit
Flowing fabrics look incredible here. Wharariki’s movement and wind can make a dress, veil or softer tailoring come alive in photographs rather than everything needing to stay perfectly in place.
Just go into it knowing that your outfit will probably meet a little sand along the way.
And honestly, I think that’s part of the charm.
Shoes You Can Actually Walk In
Remember that reaching Wharariki involves around a 20-minute walk each way, followed by walking across sand and dunes.
You absolutely don't need to do that in your wedding shoes.
Bring something comfortable for the walk, change once you arrive if you’d like to, and perhaps end up barefoot on the beach anyway.
Something Warm
Even on a beautiful day, this is an exposed stretch of coastline and conditions can change quickly.
A beautiful knit, jacket, wrap or coat can be worth having nearby — particularly if we’re staying into the evening.
And a Few Practical Things
Water
Snacks
Sunscreen & Sunglasses
Layers
Anything you’ll need while we’re away from the car are worth thinking about beforehand.
If we’re bringing flowers, a picnic, cake or ceremony details onto the beach, I’ll also plan how everything gets there and back, because carrying wedding-day logistics across the dunes isn't something you need to be worrying about.
Planning Your Wharariki Beach Elopement
Wharariki might look beautifully effortless in photographs, but creating an elopement here takes a little thoughtful planning behind the scenes.
There’s the tide and weather to consider, the walk in, your timeline, flowers and styling, where you’ll stay, the people who’ll bring everything to life — and how all of those pieces fit together without the day ever feeling rushed.
That’s where I come in.
I’ll help you shape the entire experience around the two of you — from finding the right vendors and creating the feel of the day, to planning the logistics, coordinating everyone involved and making sure there’s a beautiful Plan B tucked away if the weather has other ideas.
And when the day arrives, I’ll be there too.
Carrying the flowers across the dunes, setting up the details, keeping an eye on timings, coordinating your vendors and quietly taking care of everything happening around you.
Because you shouldn’t be standing on Wharariki Beach wondering whether the cake has arrived or checking the tide on your phone.
You should just get to be there — getting married.
FAQ’s
-
Yes. If you want your Wharariki ceremony to be your legal wedding, you’ll need to follow New Zealand’s usual marriage requirements, including obtaining a marriage licence and having the ceremony performed by an authorised marriage celebrant with two witnesses present.
Your celebrant can guide you through the legal side, and I can help bring everything else together around it.
-
It depends on exactly what you’re planning. Wharariki Beach is within Pūponga Farm Park and managed by the Department of Conservation, so permissions or concessions may be required for certain organised or commercial activities.
As part of planning your elopement, I’ll make sure we understand what’s required for your particular day rather than leaving you to navigate it yourself.
-
The main Wharariki Beach Track is approximately 1 km each way and takes around 20 minutes from the car park to the beach. The track passes through farmland and coastal forest before reaching the dunes and beach.
I’ll factor the walk into your timeline — including plenty of time to get there without feeling rushed.
-
Absolutely. An elopement doesn’t have to mean just the two of you.
Wharariki is best suited to keeping things intimate, particularly because everyone needs to walk into the beach and we’re working within a wild natural environment. If having your favourite people there matters to you, we can shape the day around a small group and make sure the location works comfortably for everyone.
-
Then we work with it.
I’ll keep an eye on the forecast as your elopement approaches and have backup options in mind if conditions mean we genuinely need to change the plan.
But a little rain doesn’t automatically mean moving your ceremony. Wharariki can be incredibly beautiful in moody weather, and sometimes an umbrella, an extra layer and a willingness to embrace the elements is all we need.
The goal isn’t a perfectly predictable day. It’s a beautifully planned one that can flex when it needs to.
